Finally, we have some real news to report on JJ Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek movie. For months now, all we’ve had to go on is rumors, with the only concrete facts about the film being that yes, it’s happening.
Our friends over at TrekMovie have spotted a story in the NY Times in which Star Trek screenwriters Orci and Kurtzman talk about their work on the movie. They’re pretty tight-lipped, but they do at last confirm what the movie will be about.
So what’s it about? It’s official, Star Trek is indeed a prequel. In the Times article they talk a lot about trying to avoid continuity issues, which is sort of a relief to anyone, like me who’s been worried that they plan to put on a pair of chuck boots and trod all over Star Trek canon. In discussion their continuity worries, the article says, “Compared to “Transformers” “Star Trek” is a miles-long minefield of established chronology, laid down over four decades, one that Mr. Orci and Mr. Kurtzman must be careful not to tamper with or contradict. But they say that by focusing their film on the earliest adventures of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, they can avoid most of these perils.”
There you have it. We now know what we already know. We just know it for certain. Star Trek is a prequel, and, since it sounds like Orci and Kurtzman are major Star Trek nuts, maybe it’ll also be one that doesn’t spit on the franchise by doing something stupid like turning the whole thing into a Kirk and Spock at the Academy thing… which is impossible since they didn’t meet till Kirk took command of the Enterprise. Since they say it’s the adventures of “Captain Kirk” that must mean the prequel will really be about Kirk’s first days in the Captain’s chair with Spock as his science officer. This could also explain some of those rumors that McCoy may not be very involved, since though Kirk and McCoy were friends long before he became a Captain, Bones didn’t join his Enterprise crew until some time after Kirk took command of the ship. It looks like continuity may be safe. Breath a little sigh of relief fellow Trekkers.
In related Trek news, and Icelandic newspaper is reporting that Paramount is in their country scouting out bleak landscapes to use in shooting Star Trek. Sounds like they need something to stand in for an alien landscape, doesn’t it? With the script finally finished, it looks like the project is now moving full steam ahead.
