I don't know which I'm happier about: that I Know Who Killed Me (Lindsay Lohan's miserable attempt at headlining a thriller movie) hardly made any money at all this weekend, or that the only entry to do worse was Who's Your Caddy (yet another painful attempt by a rap artist to cross-over into movies). But, I get ahead of myself.
The number one film this weekend, with no surprise whatsover, was The Simpsons Movie. Some people might argue that the yellow skinned family from Springfield is getting their own movie a little late in the game, but creator Matt Groening and his team have $71 million that say otherwise. That total makes them the third largest opening weekend for any animated movie (only Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third have done better). If you want to get technical, The Simpsons did slightly better on their first weekend than Transformers did. Blame it on the robots getting an early week opening that took the edge off their Friday-Sunday numbers.
No Reservations, which took a great German film and made it just good, couldn't muster the attention to top fifth place. With an $11 million opening it came in well under last week's number one I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and three weekend old Harry Potter 5.
Next weekend the end-of-summer-crap-dumping-fest continues as studios release the worst of the worst. BRATZ, a movie nearly as insipid as the doll line that inspired it, will go up against the little heard of Hotrod and the completely pointless live action version of Underdog. Jennifer Lopez, continuing her trend of making movies with her current significant other, releases the latin version of Ray, El Cantante. The only bright part of next weekend's picture is yet another sequel. The Bourne Ultimatum third in the Bourne series, will get the largest opening and no doubt be next weekend's number one.
