Britney Spears faces up to six months in jail if convicted of driving without a valid license in California but the jury can't agree on a decision and is stuck in a deadlock.
After a second day of deliberation, the foreman reported to the judge that they had failed to reach a unanimous conclusion after three votes.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James Steele ordered the jury to continue deliberating saying, “I'm going to ask you to make another attempt to resolve whatever differences you have," reports the LA Times.
Spears, 26, has been exercising her right to be absent from the trial. How will she make a comeback if she's tied up in court all day?
With each return to the jury room, the foreman told the judge, "everyone has become more entrenched."
The charge stems from an Aug. 6, 2007, fender bender in a Studio City parking lot. Spears originally faced an additional count of hit and run, but the charge was dropped after she reached a civil settlement with the owner of the other vehicle.
Both the defense and the prosecution agreed to withhold this information from the trial leaving the jury to question why she was pulled over in the first place.
During the trial, an attorney for Spears argued that she was not required to carry a California license because she considers her native Louisiana her true home and held a valid Bayou State license at the time of the accident.
