Captain America’s solo movie now has a director. In a press release sent out today, Marvel Studios announced that they’ve hired Joe Johnston to direct First Avenger: Captain America.
Joe Johnston’s no John Favreau, but he’s a capable director with a few geek friendly highlights on his resume. His directorial debut was on the 1989 movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and he followed it up with the highly underrated flick The Rocketeer. Granted, he’s also to blame for Jumanji and Jurassic Park III, but in between those two movies he directed October Sky. You could do a lot worse than Joe Johnston, a director who knows how to use heavy duty special effects and with a track record that indicates he occasionally pokes his head up and makes something, well, fantastic.
Actually since all indications are that Captain America will be a superhero period movie, The Rocketeer may be the most relevant comparison point on his resume. Imagine a Captain America movie plopped down in the world of The Rocketeer. Now that’s a movie I want to see.
Johnston is currently hard at work on The Wolfman. He’ll have First Avenger: Captain America done and ready for release on May 6, 2011.
