With Little Man, White Chicks and a few of the Scary Movies under their belt, The Wayans brothers are now moving on to some sacred territory. They are set to produce a film about the TV show The Munsters. This television show is pop culture gold, just waiting to be mined… but, the Wayans brothers? Really? They were the first to the punch?
Yes, they were the first to the punch, back in 2004. They’ve been holding the rights to the flick since then. MTV Movies Blog reports that the movie is almost ready to go into actual production. Shawn Wayans claims they are on their last draft of the script and that “I’m almost ready. It’s almost ready to be shot. We had to finish this movie and now we’re going through our third polish on The Munsters.” That’s great, but are we ready for a Wayans brothers version of The Munsters?
It sounds like Wayans at least has a great amount of respect for the characters: “We were big fans of ‘The Munsters.’ We grew up watching them. We loved the characters. We thought that they would be a very, very funny movie. You know, they did ‘The Addams Family,’ which I thought wasn’t that funny or well-thought out of a show, but they did it ‘cuz they had a catchy theme song and turned it into a movie. I thought ‘The Munsters’ had the real meat and potatoes rich characters.” I don’t know how you’re going to be making a movie about The Munsters and go and talk trash about The Addams Family, but go on ahead with your bad self, Mr. Wayans. But, just for there record, I hardly think the only reason they made The Addams Family into a film was because it had a catchy theme song.
The Munsters will be placed into the context of modern day for the movie. And, just to put you at ease, the Wayans brothers will probably not be in the movie at all: “If we do anything, maybe we’ll do a cameo, but we’re not gonna make The Munsters black all of a sudden. They’re gonna be green, white people just like they were in the TV show. Their characters are still who they were in the ‘50s. It’s just in modern day.” . Sounds like more The Haunted Mansion(2003) or Casper(1995) than The Addams Family(1991), but it does sound like a lot of fun. I, myself, loved White Chicks and am not afraid to admit it. Let the inappropriate goth humor begin!
