Oldboy fans had their world thrown into upheaval earlier this week when it was announced that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith would be remaking the gritty, disturbing, completely fucked up Korean revenge movie. Both men would probably on the top of any Oldboyers list of people they want to stay far far away from the movie. They’re both known for their proclivity for happy endings, and in Oldboy there is no sappy, happy, finale where everyone comes back from the dead. It’s kind of the point of the entire movie.
So for everyone afraid they might turn this cult favorite into some Hollywoodized disaster, here’s some good news... sort of. They aren’t remaking Oldboy at all! They’re just making the same movie with the same title, but it’s based on the source material Oldboy is based on, not the movie Oldboy itself. At least that’s what Will Smith told the boys over at Film School Rejects. Says Smith, “There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film.”
Call me a cynic, but it sounds like they’re already coming up with excuses for giving this thing the trademark Smith/Spielberg happy ending. They really can’t help themselves. See, Oldboy fans shouldn’t be mad when we completely ruin everything they’ve ever loved about this movie, because we’re not ruining that movie we’re ruining the source material it’s based on! That makes it ok… right?
