LeBron James: The Movie

You’d think everything that can be known about NBA superstar LeBron James is already known. Of course, you’d be wrong, as you often are about such things. There is much more you can learn about James and his days as a high school phenom poised to jump straight from the school gym to the NBA. Fortunately, Kristopher Belman is way ahead of you.

Belman was smart (or lucky) enough to start filming a documentary about the St. Vincent-St. Mary’s High School’s boys basketball team in Akron, Ohio back in 1999, while a student at Loyola Marymount University. The team turned out to feature the aforementioned James who has since gone onto make millions and millions… and millions as a basketball player/celebrity endorsement machine. Variety reports that More Than a Game will be released in late 2009.

The documentary premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and will be distributed by Lionsgate. Since there aren’t enough commercials at the movie theater already, the distribution also includes tie-ins with shoe, cola, and financial services companies. The hope is that James’ appeal combined with big-time corporate sponsors will give the documentary a bigger profile than the usual. Get ready for LeBron to be even more ubiquitous as the big money goes to work.
