Am I the only one having a hard time getting a handle on Mamma Mia!? Bad enough that it’s a musical using the music of ABBA, a band which I thought we’d all gotten together as a society and agreed upon forgetting. I don’t know how you make a musical out of that, or more importantly why you’d want to. But then, like anyone who doesn’t live in New York, I haven’t seen it. Yes New Yorkers, there is a world outside your city, there are places where Mamma Mia! has never been shown.
Weirder than the ABBA music though, is the cast. Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep are starring, and picturing them singing ABBA tunes is almost as hard to fathom as James Bond engaging in carefully choreographed, stage-style line-dancing. That’s just not cool.
It only gets weirder with the release of two new pictures from the Mamma Mia! set. The second one is pretty normal, but in the first one… well apparently 58-year-old Meryl Streep is spending at least part of the movie jumping on beds in her overalls. Goodbye dignity.
