The new Planet of the Apes rumors that have been roaming around the internet this weekend are true, and the movie already has a director. The latest issue of Production Weekly confirms that not only is a new Planet of the Apes movie happening, it’s being directed by Scott Frank.

You may remember a lot of hullabaloo here on Cinema Blend last year over Frank. He made his directorial debut in 2007 on what was not only one of the year’s best, but most overlooked movies The Lookout. Now 20th Century Fox is putting him in charge of revitalizing Planet of the Apes. It’s not being called Planet of the Apes: Genesis as rumored elsewhere though, they’re calling it Caesar.

Here’s the official plot synopsis from PW: “The origins of how the Apes took over Earth. A hyper-intelligent chimp raised by humans incites a worldwide ape revolution and causes the downfall of mankind.”

So we’re looking at a prequel. Not just a prequel, but a remake since this plotline was already covered in the last of the original Apes movies, 1972’s Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. It tells the story of an ape leader named Caesar (played by Roddy McDowall) leading a revolution against mankind. They’re giving us a Battle for the Planet of the Apes do over.
