I wasn’t a big fan of Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake from last year. The movie was an ill-told version of a story we already knew, only with a lot more backstory - something the story didn’t need. Remakes are already a sad habit, but making them in a fashion that ruins what was already a good story is just a shame.
It looks like Zombie is going to get a second chance to tell Michael Myers’s story. Shock Till You Drop has it on good authority that the people attached to direct Halloween 2 have left the project, leaving a clean path for Zombie to return to the director’s chair. Attempts to confirm this with Zombie’s representatives were met with “no comment,” while the production company wants to put out a proper press release soon. Everything they say points to the idea that Zombie will be what is mentioned in that press release though.
Rob Zombie’s Halloween wasn’t horrible as a film as much as it was horrible as a story, because it demystified a character that was better left shrouded in a bit of mystery. If he can get a better story going for the sequel, I’d be willing to see another of his pictures, primarily because Zombie seems to be improving as a filmmaker with each picture. Sooner or later he’ll wind up with a watchable picture, but he needs to start with a stronger story first. Lets hope Halloween 2 brings that to Zombie’s hands.
