Ohhhhhhh this makes sense. The mystery "non stand-up comedian, non-TV personality" Oscar host that Nikki Finke teased yesterday has been revealed. The Drover! I mean, Wolverine! I mean, Hugh Jackman!
Of course! Jackman hosted the Tonys three years in a row, and in addition to being the reigning Sexiest Man Alive, he's also one of the most multi-talented. It'll be like when Billy Crystal used to open the show with a musical number, except Jackman is actually a talented singer and dancer. Finke says in her story this morning that Jackman isn't yet a lock; first of all, he won't be doing the usual opening bit stuffed full of insider Hollywood jokes. "I don't want that for him," an unnamed insider told Finke. "He is an actor with big movies behind him and one coming this summer. He didn't work the last 20 years to suddenly be a stand-up comedian."
So what will Jackman actually do? Maybe he'll just host the thing, without worrying about how many jokes to crack or which celebrities are OK to make fun of. He'll sing a little, dance a little, flash that smile, hand out some awards, and everyone can call it a night. I think it's a brilliant call. Anyone want to argue with me?
