Hollywood's siren song of sequels and remakes is too much to resist for even the best of us, it seems. Even though Rob Zombie swore up and down he wouldn't make a sequel to his 2007 reimagining of Halloween, Dimension Films has slowly but surely lured him back to the fold. Shock 'Til You Drop reported it as a rumor two weeks ago, and now Variety has confirmed it: Zombie will direct H2.
But hey guys, don't call it a sequel! As Variety writes, "Zombie said it won't resemble the original second installment, as the "House of 1000 Corpses" helmer continues to take the franchise in different directions." He'd better figure out what those directions will be right quick, since he's planning to have the movie completed for an October 2009 release. He told Variety, "That's the problem making a movie called 'Halloween': If you come out Nov. 1 or after, nobody cares. If it was called anything else, I'd be fine."
The Halloween release date makes way more sense than the August release for the first film, even though that led to a $60 million box office gross. If Zombie can get the thing finished in time, he might have a franchise installment that can finally give Saw a run for its Halloween money.
