It’s going to be a very long awards season for the world’s legions of Batman fans. The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association, my critics association as a matter of fact, has become the latest in a long line of critics groups to skip The Dark Knight for Best Picture and Best Director. Heath Ledger did however, get another win for his brilliant portrayal of the Joker and the movie did land a second win for Best Cinematography. Still, the year’s most popular and perhaps best reviewed film’s chances of making a strong showing at Oscar continue to dwindle. Hey, I did my best. They only give me one vote.
At least this push towards little seen limited releases may encourage people to see movies which they might otherwise skip, movies like Milk which the 32 print, broadcast, and online journalists (me!) of the DFWFCA awarded Best Screenplay and for which Sean Penn scored a Best Actor win. No one movie dominated the awards. Milk, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Dark Knight all garnered two. Below is the full breakdown of the DFWFCA’s 2008 winners.
