Resident Evil has probably managed the most successful transition from videogame to movie, with three films where most franchises can barely manage one. So it should be no surprise that Sony Pictures and video game company Capcom want to extend that success into other formats as well. The two companies are teaming up to produce an animated feature film titled Biohazard: Degeneration.

Unlike previous franchises that have attempted similar transitions (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter), the animated story won’t be based on the characters or storyline of the movie and will exist independently from the Milla Jovavich trilogy. That explains the lack of a “Resident Evil” title, instead reverting to the Japanese title for the video game series: “Biohazard.”

Although no cast, crew, or solid story details have been announced, Sony is slating the movie for a 2008 release date. The movie will be 3-D CG animation according to Variety.
