Sometimes when studios get bought out or close, it affects the average moviegoer. When Yari Film Group filed for bankruptcy in December, for example, it significantly hurt the promotional campaigns for Nothing But the Truth and What Doesn't Kill You, which might otherwise have actually been seen by audiences. But production company Relativity Media has purchased Rogue Pictures, and unless you really, really care about where your $10 ticket price is going, you probably won't notice.
Variety lays out all the details with their typical attention to detail, but basically all you need to know is that Universal will still distribute Rogue movies like the upcoming The Unborn, but Relativity will get more of the money. Universal sold the studio off for $150 million, but apparently could have gotten twice that if the economy weren't completely imploding. Apparently even cheapie horror movies aren't safe bets these days.
In conclusion: Some studio heads made some money by selling something but not actually changing anything. In the meantime your 401(k) probably dropped in value again. You're welcome.
