If you’re still in doubt about McG’s ability to make a Terminator movie, here’s something that might win you over - the director is trying to tie his film, Terminator Salvation, into the other pictures as tightly as possible. This effort even includes the possibility of a past franchise star, used in an incredibly exciting way.
McG talked to Sci-Fi Wire about his upcoming film and laid one concern to rest - the movie will utilize elements of Brad Fidel’s classic Terminator score. That’s contrary to what Danny Elfman told the press when he talked about landing the gig, but McG obviously has a clearer idea of what he wants. It sounds like just needs to communicate that to the composer.
Speaking of what McG wants, the director talks about something that feels like a pipe dream - he is planning to talk to the original Sarah Connor, Linda Hamilton, about doing a voice-over narration that would bookend the film. The concept behind the voice-overs would be that they came from the audio tapes Sarah begins to record for her (at that time unborn) son, John Connor, at the end of the original Terminator. "The tapes that she left for her son to be aware of what it was going to take to win the war, those are the tapes that are going to bring us in and out of the picture."
McG says Hamilton seems to be supportive of his Terminator picture, so maybe this isn’t the pipe dream it sounds like. I, for one, think the idea of having those tapes to open and close the picture is a pretty cool idea, and a nice link to Cameron’s original film.
