A few months ago you never would have thought of Katie Holmes as a "New York Type actor," but it's amazing what a run in one of Broadway's only financially successful plays can do. Mrs. Tom Cruise will join Kevin Kline, Paul Dano and John C. Reilly, all New Yorkers, in The Extra Man, a comedy that will film you-know-where in February.
Not only is the movie packed with theater actors, it's set within the world of New York theater people as well-- just not the successful ones. Variety says Kline will play a wannabe playwright who "escorts" rich widows on the Upper East Side for cash, and befriends a fellow aspiring playwright, played by Dano.
Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, who made the celebrated American Splendor back in 2003, are directing the film and wrote it, based on the novel by Jonathan Ames. That's the biggest sign that this will be more than the usual, too-clever-for-its own good indie about people you would never like in real life. Then again, the last movie they directed was The Nanny Diaries. So I guess you never really can know for sure.
