I don’t know anyone who had a positive gut reaction to the news that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were doing an Oldboy adaptation. Whether the source material is the original comic book or Park Chan-wook’s 2003 movie, the story is dark - and very few seem confident that Spielberg or Smith are likely to embracing that element of the story. But it may have been that very darkness that brought the stars to the tentatively scheduled movie.
“It’s the thing that Steven was attracted to,” Will Smith told MTV News. “We’re working from the comic and we haven’t done anything other than talk about it. So we’ll see what happens, but he’s not going to do anything that would be less than stunning.”
Well, it’s nice to hear that Spielberg recognizes such an important element of the story - this isn’t something that can be happily Hollywoodized into a cheerful ending. The darker elements of the story - which include societal taboos I don’t even want to touch upon - are so imperative to how this story is told. If Spielberg recognizes that, maybe there is hope for the project. After all, Spielberg can do dark stories. Not everything the director has done is kittens and rainbows, and we need to remember that.
Is it just me, though, or does Smith’s comment sound like this isn’t a sure thing? All they’ve done is talk about the project, and Smith flat out says Spielberg won’t do it if it isn’t stunning. I know we report a lot about Spielberg’s involvement with different films, and he’s shifted around his schedule several many times, leaving pet projects about Abraham Lincoln or the Chicago 7 all but cancelled; indefinitely in limbo until films already underway are complete. It could very well be that Spielberg finds he doesn’t have room on his plate for an Oldboy adaptation, and all of this fuss has been for nothing.
