Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry have singed on to endorse Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire via their respective production companies, Harpo Films and 34th Street Films.Push, an emotional film about an overweight Brooklyn teen, premiered at Sundance and has been bought in a fat deal with Lionsgate. Winfrey and Perry jumped into the agreement and will be involved in promotion of the film.
Variety reports that the film was acquired by Lionsgate for more than $5 million! This purchase marks the heftiest sum paid for a movie at Sundance this year. Winfrey and Perry’s involvement in the deal make it worth much more than that price tag, though. Oprah’s stamp of approval has been all many books need to make it to the best seller list, while Perry movies are wildly successful with African American audiences across the globe. This is the first time the two have teamed up to promote a film and their involvement is sure to bring in huge audiences to this tiny Sundance film.
Winfrey gushes “I've never seen anything like it. The moment I saw Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie. The film is so raw and powerful -- it split me open.”. Perry simply states, “I am honored to join Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate in releasing Lee Daniels' exceptional film.” Push marks the first film not written and directed by Perry to be backed by his production company.
Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire follows the story of Claireece Precious Jones (Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe). The girl has grown up neglected and abused by her mother, raped by her father and forgotten by most. She is overweight, uneducated and pregnant with her second child when she gets accepted into an alternative school. Claireece narrates the movie in stilted dialect. The film won both the grand jury prize and the audience awards in the US dramatic competition while the film’s star, Mo’Nique, won the special jury prize. The movie is directed by Lee Daniels, adapted from the novel by Damiel Paul and co-stars Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz.
