There's an upcoming comedy in which some people who really have no business traveling the world find themselves on global adventures. And while Carl and Russell in Up are really an unlikely pair of wilderness explorers, Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman might have them beat.
The two actors, who will be seen together in Judd Apatow's upcoming Funny People, will star in The Adventurer's Handbook for Universal. Variety reports that Hill wrote the script with Max Spicer and Max Winkler, based on the book by Matt Conefrey. Hill and Schwartzman will play half a quartet of guys who go out exploring, inspired by the tales recounted in Confrey's book. You know, it's like Po the Panda being inspired to do kung fu by the Furious Five, except probably without the "finally turns out to be a great warrior" thing.
Usually I'm just fine with Apatow's chosen crew doing pretty much whatever they want, because it usually turns out at least somewhat funny. But it worries me that they've picked Akiva Schaffer to direct, given that his only previous movie is the not particularly great Andy Samberg vehicle Hot Rod. He's been directing the digital shorts on SNL, including all the instantly iconic ones. so he's obviously got a sense of comedic timing. But can he handle a production that seems to be full of international shooting locations and a big cast? You may like working with your buddies, Jonah Hill, but you also may be destroying your movie before it ever gets a chance to live.
