In the midst of all the horror remakes and re-imaginings (which is really just a fancy term for remakes) comes the new version of Friday the 13th. Between the recent popularity of horror remakes and the lack of anything more interesting in theatres, the movie raked in over $42 million in its first weekend, more than the original film made in its entire run.
It's also a sum more than twice the film's budget. For those of you keeping score at home that's the industry equivalent of being given an instant green light for sequel release. The next viable Friday the 13th is August 2010. If that sounds too soon, remember that they're currently cranking out Saw films faster than Angelina Jolie is adding kids to her family.
Half-baked Confessions of a Shopaholic came in fourth place with $15 million, which is better than Clive Owen's The International could boast. With only $10 million it slunk in at seventh place. That makes four financial flops in a row for Mr. owen. Perhaps the international sales might give the film the boost it needs to get into the black, but short of that little miracle Clive is quickly becoming a not-so-bankable star.
