Scott Explains His Robin Hood Plans

Ridley Scott’s alternate take on Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe and titled Nottingham, was a movie that really had my attention. I really got into the idea of telling the story from the villain’s point of view, and possibly showing the Sheriff of Nottingham in a different light. I also really liked the rumored idea of Crowe playing dual roles, as both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Well, it turns out very little of what we knew about Scott’s film is true, and the resulting picture isn’t quite as interesting conceptually as I’d hoped.

MTV’s Movies Blog chatted with Scott recently, where he revealed that his next picture is likely to be Robin Hood. Yes, that’s right. Forget that Nottingham title. The movie is Robin Hood, plain and simple. It still stars Crowe, but he will be the hero, not the villain. In fact, now the Sheriff of Nottingham is a “less important” character for the movie. So much for that skewed perspective.

The movie will feature Robin Hood as one of the archers in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion, but the movie sounds a lot more like a historical piece, with Robin as a player in a war being waged between the hierarchy of the time - the wealthy versus the poor. In essence, the entire country of France becomes the villain of the picture, since France owned much of England at the time.

Reading the interview with Scott, I can’t help but think this is pretty much Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, only with his Gladiator star in the lead, playing a character that sounds a lot like his noble character from that movie, only motivated by some sort of ethical value to even things out instead of revenge. I’ll give Scott the benefit of the doubt, but this doesn’t sound like a movie I want to see anymore. Instead it sounds like several movies the director has already done that I’ve already seen, and would rather not watch again.
