Children of the 70s happily remember the terrible special effects of the series Land of the Lost, and children of the 90s are nostalgic for an only slightly more slick version. But with the movie version of Land of the Lost coming this summer, with big stars and a big budget and all that, a lot of us have worried that the low-tech charm of the series would be lost amid all the technical wizardry.
But this new clip from the movie, posted by MTV, indicates the goofy effects might not be gone for good. There's no stop-motion dinosaurs or anything, but the bugs feasting on Will Ferrell in this scene as he plays the banjo are definitely deliberately unrealistic. I have no idea if that's the aesthetic they're going for, or if the CGI in this sequence happens to be particularly bad. But if they can come up with a clever way to make the special effects look less than spectacular, and still make the movie entertaining, I think even series creators Sid and Marty Krofft can be proud.
