The Shrek franchise will be moving forward once more with the planned fourth film Shrek Goes Forth, but the fractured fairy tale gimmick has already bled over into other projects. Not that Shrek was the first to do it, of course, but Mike Myers and his Scottish brogue certainly put their stamp on "happily ever after" stories over the last decade.
Now MGM is jumping on the bandwagon, with plans to develop the original screenplay Once Upon a Time..., written by Charles Vignola, Kevin Marcus and Bradley Marcus. THR isn't sharing too many details, other than that the movie deliberately tweaks fairy tales in the style of Shrek. And honestly, as much as the Shrek series may have worn out its welcome after the third movie, there's really no limit to how charming a movie can be when it takes a clever spin on our tried and true fairy tales. Not to say that Once Upon a Time... is guaranteed to be clever, but if it pulls it off, it'll be proof that there's still life left in that tried-and-true gimmick.
