If there's one thing that Watchmen proved it's that it had little to offer for those who aren't already fans. That's the word coming from many corners, but it's being mirrored in the film's financial turn out as well.
The movie's record breaking online ticket pre-sales and solid midnight preview turn out left many expecting it to exceed the success of its graphic novel cousin 300. But when Friday's full numbers came up short and Saturday's were even weaker, it was clear that devoted fans saw it early, saw it once, and that the movie is in for a quick decline.
That's not to say the movie did poorly. With $55 million on its first weekend it not only easily snatched number one it secured a likely positive return on investment for Warner Brothers who sank $150 million into the film. But a place in history? Not so much.
While it is the top weekend opener of the year so far, it didn't fare so well compared to other rated R releases. The Passion of the Christ took in $83 million its first weekend and 300 did $70 million of business out of the gate. Even Sex and the City took in slightly more with $57 million in May of last year.
