Scorsese is officially making a Frank Sinatra biopic and that means, almost certainly, month after month after month of casting rumors followed by the inevitable announcement that, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio will star in it. The rumors start with the standard default for any casting rumor circle-jerk: Johnny Depp.
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Universal Pictures, the company funding Marty’s Sinatra, has Depp pegged as their first choice for the part. Their interest is supposedly based, in part on his great performance in Public Enemies due out this summer. I guess they got a good look and Depp in a Fedora and decided they needed more of it.
You might think Johnny makes sense, since he’ll be playing a singer and he’s already proven that he can, at least sort of, sing with his stint in Depp’s Sweeney Todd. But that’s not a factor here. Word is that the actor who plays Frank won’t do any singing. Instead they’ll use real recordings of Sinatra’s actual voice, as part of a deal made with the Frank Sinatra Estate to get the rights to the life of Ol’ Blue Eyes.
