Bitcommet freezes

I use BitComet 1.12 with windows xp home sp3. i recently upgraded my hardware. i now have 4gb ram, and a intel core 2 quad processor. before the hardware upgrade i had no issues at all using bitcomet. unfortunatley now bitcommet freezes very often randomly. sometimes it runs right through the night but it oould just as easily freeze an hour after i start bitcommet. It is only bitcommet that freezes, i.e. the rest of my system works, however i cannot access the internet after the crash. I also cant shuit donw bitcommet whatever i try. I have tio do a mnanual shut down by pressing the power button. This happens daily if not more often. I dont have a router. I use zone alarm security suite, but i used it even on my old system and it doesnt create any issues.

could someone help me?

This sounds like you might have a memory or possibly a driver problem. Please run a through memory test. You might wanna remove your memory modules, clean the contacts, and reinstall them, but make sure your static free before doing this.

Also, assuming you did a motherboard upgrade, you probably should reformat and do a fresh windows installation.

Since you have over 3gb of ram, a 64bit windows would be a good upgrade. Personally I've never liked the 64bit WinXP, but Vista x64 runs quite well. Many people say good things about Win7, but I don't recommend pre-release versions, in fact I usually wait a year after release for full hardware/software support.

You don't have to wipe off your existing winXP to install another os, but you might have to partition your harddrive if you only have one with a single partition.

My feelings are that if its not a memory problem, then reinstalling windows will fix the problem, but I will add that getting rid of zonealarm is a good idea. there are much better products you can use.

Hi again. As you had predicted it was not the memory so i went ahead and installed vista on my new hard drive. My final question ( i hope), now that i have installed bit commet on my new suystem, i still have a download folder from my old system with a lot of half downloaded files. can i use these partial downloads so that i dont have to start downloading the same files again from scratch. Thanks for your help in advance.

just download the .torrent files again and have them point exactly at the same folders as before, a window will show saying that you have downloaded those files before click ok and wait for the hash check.

a life without an end.. a feast without dessert.
