BitComet (1.11, 1.12, 1.13) crashes randomly
Size: Large, Medium, Small Sat Jul 18, 09 04:53 AM | Category: All

My bitcomet downloads fine for a 2-3 hours and then crashes. This has been happening every night for the last 2 weeks without fail. I have been a user of bitcomet for over a year and this is the first time I have ever had problems of any kind. The problems only occurs when downloading. I don't have more than 4 download tasks running at any instance. My current BC version is 1.13. I upgraded from 1.12 after BC crashed for the 1st time two weeks back. Now I have gone back to 1.12 and then to 1.11 but its futile and it still crashes after 2-3 hours. Funny thing is 1.11 and 1.12 used to work fine for me earlier.

My Operating System is Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 @ 1.83 GHZ processor.

I use BitDefender Internet Security Suite with inbuilt firewall. I have also turned off all unnecessary services and startup programs following advice in some other posts. I have run a virus scan and cleaned the registry with CCleaner too. But to no avail thus far. Here is the crash report I am getting after BC crashes:

I have the same problem as you. My bitcomet MUST crash after I left the pc run itself for a period. I turned off all sleep /screen saver/ suspend HDD function in window. But the bitcomet still crashes for unknown reason. If i am using the computer, the bitcomet run perfect. Once I left the pc for a period (eg. sleeping at night), the bitcomet MUST crash.

My Operating System is Windows 7 RC 64 bit, 6 GB RAM, 2TB HDD, Intel i7.

Here is the crash log.

Ok so after two weeks of trouble, I have finally managed to solve the problem. Since the exception was caused at Kernel32.dll, I suspected that some other program that was running in the background (system tray) must be conflicting with BC. Other applications use Kernel32.dll too.

It turned out that the culprit was the program "Laptop Battery Doubler" from Daschund Softwares which was running in the sys tray. Got rid of that program. Then uninstalled BC 1.13 and downloaded the non-installation (zip) version of BC 1.10 and it ran all day without crashing since.

[continued in next post due to character limit.....]

I didn't try out BC 1.13 after getting rid of "Laptop Battery Doubler" but instead went for v1.10 which used to work flawlessly for me. So, I can't tell for sure whether the versions 1.13, 1.12 and 1.11 are buggy or the problem was solely caused by the battery app. It may be a coincidence. Its possible that BC v1.10 is good and the battery app had nothing to do with it. But as I said before, I tried 1.13, 1.12 and 1.11 both but none of them worked although they used to work earlier.

So anyone else having this problem, first try out v1.10 of BC. If it continues to crash, you will have to find out which app running in the background is causing the problem. Go to Start ---> Run, type "Msconfig" (without quotes). Go to startup tab and uncheck all programs which is not necessary. If you have Norman antivirus, get rid of it as it causes trouble with BC. If you have a webcam app, uncheck it too. I unchecked everything except my Antivirus, HD audio sound manager, sidebar and HP quick Launch. Click on OK and restart PC. Hopefully problem will be solved. Good luck to the above poster too.

I follow the direction of software conflict of bitcomet.

Today, i turn off "startup" software, including KAV antivirus. But the crash window still comes out after 2-3 hours. Actually, my pc startup program are always less than five. In the past, I dont have any problem with Bitcomet.

This 1.13 is really buggy, at first i dont notice. One day, my sister told me that everytime she wake up or back to home and then saw the bitcomet crash window. Then, i think either my PC or bitcomet should have some problem. This is my first time to use bitcomet at 64 bit window, i am not sure whether the crash related to it.

Now , I go back to version 1.03, see if the crash window comes out again.

Since this is the first time you've run bitcomet on a 64bit operating system, that told me where to look for your problem, then I see your running an unreleased (experimental) windows version, which is surely the problem here.

I'm sure if you install Vista 64bit you won't have this problem. When Windows 7 is officially released, I'm sure our development team will work on any compatibility issues, but please do as "Gavin" asks and provide the crash report on our beta version of 1.14, and do it as soon as possible, so any bugs that are found can be incorporated into the final 1.14 release.

Thanks all reply and help.

I went back to bitcomet v1.03 last night, no more crash.

I am running 30 tasks and it is very stable.

I will try 1.14beta later.

My previuos post was not written clearly. This is the first time I ran v1.13 bitcomet at win7 rc 64 bit. But actually I ran bitcomet v1.03 at win7 64bit continously 7/24 for a month without any crash. Therefore, I think v1.03 is very stable for me (for win7 rc).

So, BC 1.13 is really buggy after all. There are reports of regular crashes with this version in other websites too. I am glad 1.03 worked out for you.

1.13 runs very stable on the three computers I tested it on. Vista ultimate 64bit, Vista ultimate 32bit, and XP sp2.

When Windows 7 is released, I will test it with the current version of BitComet.
