Here's Something New

Now, this is a difficult one. I have been smoking for 12 years and recently I have decided to quit. Before I did quit though I went out and did a little research, utilizing the library on campus I tried to find out how many people really do stop smoking. To some it may come as a shock and to others it is expected, but most people DO NOT stop smoking after the first time. For most people it is a multitude of failures until success is gained. With this knowledge comfortably in my possession I went out and did more research. Cornering my students and my fellow colleagues at the university I tried to find out how many of them smoked, who are still smoking and who never smoked. There are several categories of smokers: 1) The Casual SmokerThis is the most common smoker, they love company and they love to smoke in company. Chances are that they always carry cigarettes with them and are the easiest people to get a cigarette from. 2) The Social SmokerThis person only smokes in company of people. It is likely that they don't even buy cigarettes, they just ask for it from the Casual Smoker and he is happy to comply. 3) The Chain SmokerThese people cannot put a cigarette down. They are clearly spotted by their trademark signature; by lighting a new cigarette with the old one. These people are also the forefront leaders in smokers’ rights. That new smoking lobby outside, chances are that they designed it. Some cases of Chain Smoking is so bad that they cannot even sleep properly, they wake up in the middle of the night just to get 'a fix'. 4) The QuitterIn my studies I came across a couple of these people. They are always quitting... but they are always smoking. If you ask them if they want a cigarette their first answer is always "I really shouldn’t, I'm trying to quit". But they take the cigarette and still smoke. 5) The Real QuitterThey don't smoke, not anymore. They don't ask you for a cigarette, and they don't have a cigarette. But I have noticed that a fairly large number of them carry lighters, Zippos or matches. Perhaps a reminder of the past or maybe it has other uses? So, how do you quit? The thing is, you never do quit. That is impossible, you will always be addicted but it comes down how you control it. I heard many methods on how to quit. Everything from going 'cold-turkey' to easing out by smoking a lighter cigarette (which does not work, I found these people only smoke more now). With so many products on the market to help you stop, (nicotine patches, gum, spray etc.) why don't you? And then one night it hit me as I watched one student in particular. She was fiddling, twitching and always moving. Upon asking her when she stopped smoking she told that she stopped about three days ago. You see! Smokers need something to do, they are so used to having something in their hand that when they stop they can kill the craving, but there is nothing in their hand. So they fiddle and twitch and tap their fingers on tables, always looking around but never paying attention. Now comes the real problem, what can you do to keep yourself occupied?

My father went cold turkey 10 years ago on a first attempt, after smoking fairly heavily for 30 odd years. Took him a few days to get over the physical addition, as he was literal deathly sick. After a month or so, he gained 200 or so lbs which he has yet to shed. My mother still smokes on a light to medium level. He's said that if he were to take up smoking again, he would not even attempt quiting.

Then again he is a guy who took a dozen or so box jellyfish tentacles to the groin and thighs and didn't even peep. >.>

Reality is your fractured Perception of the Truth. Your Perception relies on the Choices you make. You therefore, control your Reality. And the Truth?

Can say that 100% of smokers already knews that smoking is bad for health and nearly 100% also knows what illness they will get for smoking, still they continue smoking and that include me. I'm considered as heavy smoker or as you categorize as chain smoker coz i can smoke up to 2 boxes of Dunhill premium box which is contain 20 ciggarettes per box within a day. And yes quiting smoking is one of the hardest problem that i encounter in my life. Wish I didn't start smoking. As far as I can remember there's been 4 or 5 times I've decided to quit smoking and each attempt is a total disaster. Guess it's all about discipline. Well maybe somtimes in the future....

The best way to stop smoking is not starting at all.

Go for it man. You can, kill the asp, get rid of the leech.

Think of all the cash you'll save, and what are you going to buy with it!

Quit smoking! Yeah!

Humans only need three drugs: beer, chocolate and sex.

Head in the clouds. Feet on the ground.

So it has been three days without a cigarette. The symptoms are... disturbing to say the least. I have decided to go 'cold-turkey' and see how long this will last. I ask support from the community with all and any advice that could be of help. To those of you that already left comments, I thank you.

i started smoking when i was about 8 or 9.i was born i europe where this is common.up till last year i was what i guess many would call a casual smoker.about 6 to 8 cigarettes a day. now i noticed that when i drank i smoked alott more. so i stoped drinking about a year ago.so i stoped smoking cigaretts also. all was good for a little while until i started smoking black and milds, not inhaling at first.eventually i started inhaling and now i smoke about 3 to 4 cigars a day. it seems where i could do without cigarettes if i had to i crave these cigars more than i used to cigarettes.i dont think i can stop these as easily as i did cigarettes.

I was a smoker for 11 years, a box a day. One day I was out of cigs and went out to buy some. As I stopped in front of the shop I thought: What the hell, and went back home. Haven't smoked since and thats over 30 years ago.

A hint: Think back and be proud of your achievements, like -Now I haven't smoked for 10 hours, good, I'm doing fine. -Now I haven't smoked for 2 days, why start again now. -I haven't smoked for a week, I don't need to. And so on.
