BitComet and TvTorrents user zoebug98 reported that tvtorrents have just banned BitComet. Thank you very much for the report, zoebug.

Even the latest version (0.99) of BitComet is banned from the tracker, and the staff has not given any arguments to why, they have banned BitComet (a long with a bunch of other clients too.)

That is not tolerable - they can ban clients, if they have good arguments to do so. However, there has not been any bugreports from the TvTorrent SysOps on the BitComet forums, so this is very untrustworthy.
We have to get an explanation for this ban.

I've contacted the admin for TvTorrents and waiting for a reply.
Keep an eye in the "comments" on this blog entry for updates.

Thank you very much for fighting for all BitComet users.

I have never used another program other than BitComet to download things. I have over 165 GB of credit on TvTorrents, so there hasn't been any problem with them using my BitComent connection to upload to other people on their site.

I sure hope you get some results from TvTorrents. It is a decent site to get good quality downloads pretty quickly.

I just found this posted on the TvTorrents website.

Client Banning now in effect!

UPDATE : 2008-02-02

Please do NOT ask us which clients are or are not banned! Read the entire post here!

The ban list of clients has been created within the database. Due to the size of it, it will not be published. You will know based on the tracker error you receive.

If you receive a tracker error indicating that your client has been banned, please either switch to one of the recommended clients or update to the most current version of the one you are using.

This action has been taken for many reasons, which will ultimately benefit all of us from a reporting and performance perspective.

Currently, we recommend current versions of : uTorrent, Azureus, Transmission, ktorrent, rtorrent, tomato. Most torrent clients are NOT banned, too many too list. Just TRY it and see if you get the error, but PLEASE, do NOT ask us!

The admnin for TVtorrents responded to my message.

He is willing to unban BitComet, but BitComet is using user-agent BitTorrent 3.4.2.

The problem is that almost all the malicious clients - including BitSpirit, BitLord and so on are using this old user-agent. Therefore, the admin cannot tell the clients apart, and BitComet will automatically be banned along with the other clients.

This is a problem, but it will get solved. Have a little patience.

Copy of message for those who are interested:

Hi,

Thanks for your interest. I don't ban clients by name, but by what signature they present to the tracker (user-agent) while announcing.

I have not collected one single signature with the word bitcomet in it, but several clients seems to present themselves as Bittorrent/3.4.2. This includes bitlord, bitspirit as wells as old flawed version of bitcomet etc. etc.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to investigate exactly what clients use that signature as I see clients misbehaving that use that signature, my only option is to block it all together. If there was a way to distinguish later more properly working versions and above all, to tell bitcomet apart from bitlord and others, it wouldn't be banned unless it was found to misbehave.

If the signature has been updated, it would pass. But since I hear from so many people that they can't connect with bitcomet, I can only conclude that it still uses the same signature. It SHOULD be unique for each version of the program or at the very minimum per version of the bittorrent library/module.

I can't for the life of me understand why it would use such an old and obselete signature.

Regards

Johan

You might wonder what is happening in this case, and I can say we're in a bit of a troublesome situation.

The admin for TvTorrents is willing to unban BitComet, but he can't since BitComet is using an "outdated" user-agent. (BitTorrent 3.4.2).

Therefore we're standing in that situation, where it all depends on the developers.

However, I can say with a smile on my face that it is a small "victory", since the admin has confirmed he is willing to unban the client - now it is only a matter of time - a matter of how fast (and willing) the developers are.

It is reported to the developers as far as I know, so we must have patience.

Best regards

Yes, I'm aware of that tracker. However, we can't commence an attempt on unbanning BitComet on any trackers before the urgent core-bugs have been fixed.

But thanks for your comment!
