Does the woman in the photo to the right look anything like Bob Dylan? No? Well, friends, you have just witnessed the magic of Cate Blanchett. This is the first set photo released from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that features Blanchett, thanks to a scoop over at Empire Online. Blanchett, up for two Oscars this year, plays a superbad Russian agent who, based on this photo, is definitely after Indy for more than his rugged good looks. Those cold Siberian eyes!
Everyone in the photo looks disturbingly uncommitted to the situation. Blanchett is looking off to the side as if she’s distracted by some other devastatingly handsome archaeologist/adventurer, while Indy has this disdainful look, like “You and I both know this is a fake sword, so why don’t we just make out already?” And let’s not even talk about the guy to Indy’s left, whose protruding tongue and hand near the crotch evoke way more than the photo probably ever intended.
Interestingly, another Indy shot showed up on the internet yesterday, over at Movieweb, but the site was asked by the studio to take down the image. I was ready to write the whole thing off as a hoax, or maybe fan art, but now…. verrrry interesting. It purported to show the actual crystal skull from the movie, a bluish, very oblong and thin thing that at least one blogger thought confirmed the presence of aliens in the movie. Wait, aliens?? What was wrong with Nazis as villains? Anyway, the picture of Cate Blanchett’s icy stare may be cool, but its that darn crystal skull that’s really got me anxious now. But head over to Empire for a full-size look at what, for now, is the only new image from the movie.
