It's slim pickings for new movies this weekend. There's a little something for die hard Will Ferrell fans who love to pay $10 to see any movie he makes no matter how bad it looks up front. Otherwise, you're left with mediocre dramas in somewhat limited release.
Will Ferrell returns, yet again, to the role of over-the-top, out-of-place athlete for Semi-Pro [READ THE CB REVIEW]. We've seen him do this schtick too many times before and it's gotten to the point that if you even think there's even a remote chance it might be hilarious you deserve the misery of sitting through it. Still, with last week's Vantage Point slipping and the large portion of the American audience who are inexplicably drawn to lame humor, Semi-Pro is an easy lock for the number spot this weekend.
Apparently Hollywood feels that King Henry VIII hasn't had his rampant over-sexualized antics explored enough in the realm of entertainment. The Other Boleyn Girl [READ THE CB REVIEW] tosses him right back in the limelight. If you've seen any of the posters or trailers (or Johannson and Portman's red carpet shenanigans) or read reviews you've probably guessed the movie is banking on pretty faces in and out of pretty dresses to lure you in. If you buy that and ignore all the warnings, again, you deserve to have to sit through it.
Penelope [Read The CB Preview] features Christina Ricci as a beautiful girl with a pig nose (flashbacks to "Twilight Zone" anyone?). Boys come to call on her but, upon seeing her nose, dive out second story windows to escape. The tale of "beauty within" isn't getting rave reviews, but as the most original new release this weekend it's probably your best bet for something that won't completely bore you to tears.
