This might sound as a quite reasonable conclusion, but i feel it is really important for a driver to know his limits and to know when he has run out of steam and is no longer in the race for any points of if he will ever have any chanse to become a champion.

This certainly is the point with David Coulthard. He has been living on his vast knowledge about F1 for some yoears now, and Redbull Racing has kept him in the team because they needed someone who could share that information with them. This season he hasent done anything godd on the track except beeing in the way of his competitors, and i really think he should resign to from racing.

It is something to have alot of experience, wich he has more than even Michael Shumacher, and he certainly is the oldest driver on the grid. To have the ability ti keep on racing for all those years, have to be commended, but when he has nothin more to give i think he should be that insightful and admit it. There's no place for him anymore, and there's alot of new talents who need a place to be able to prove them selves.

although i like all british drivers some thing say,s you have a valid point but if he was in a better team maybe he would prove himself more...but maybe he could also do like many others and move into the garage and use his knowledge wisely....

tricky question just when is the right time to give up....

if one is not winning its not always advisable to give up but to prove yourself stronger to push more....what if mika hakikenan made a come back didn,t do owt would he just walk away....or what about schumi if he came back for a season who would turn him down....?

differcult answer to give just cause some one is not winning....

all the best wish,s to you.......

Well Christara, you certainly have a good point there. But if were talking Coulthard, i believe he has had all the time needed to prove him self. He have been in McLaren, and even though he did manage to win some races, he have never been able to win a championchip. Even though he was a reliable driver, and always finished amongst the top-six, he never had "that".

Talking Schumi, he said he would quit when he felt he was'nt the the fastest driver on the grid anymore, and along came Alonso and proved it was time for him to quit. And that is what's going to be his fame after he quit racing i think, Alonso will always be known as the driver who beat Schumacher head on.

Hakkinen was in kind of the same seat at Coulthard was a couple of years ago. The difference was that Coulthard decided to downgrade to a smaller team, while Hakkinen decided it was time to quit. A wise decision i say, if you want to stay known as one of the fastest, and not to have people looking down on you because you did not had the speed in the end.

yer but if you look at coultard you have to look at barricello and say the same..all the time he sat along side schumi he was more often than not nothing in the way of an equal...even tho he was in the same car...

its hard to decide when to quit on something...

if you look at alonso now should he quit..i think no. but he,s not winning he,s in a crap car....its has its differencess,s in the sport that one minute you are so at the top but just the next your in a awful car and your last...its not measured in winning but by how good you can consistantly prove your good...put some one in the best and fastest car doesn,t just make them the best....to give his best and almost win every race is what made hamilton and rakkien the best two drivers out there for now and for along time to come...as for alonso he is not rated by me....when he won he was in the best car.best launch control and beter handling...but if you judge him now he shoul quit...??? this is a way at looking at consistancy...???

have a cool day mate,e chat ya laters....

all the best wish,s to you.......

If we take Button and Barrichello into the mix, i believe we have the two drivers who might both break and confirm my quote.

Barrichello have always been a talented driver, and i think he had his greatest chance during his time at Ferrari, as teammate to Michael Shumacher.

While not winning that many races, due to not being permitted to by the team because of Michael being the number one driver in the team, he always was amongst the best. Helping the team to pick points and allowing them to win the Constructors Championship. But i actually think that he had also had some really good races during his years at Jordan and Stewart. Those are years i have don't have full knowledge about, but i know he beat some of the best drivers at times and had some GP-wins.

His years at Honda teaming up with Button have really not been easy to cope with, and i admire him for being able to keep on. The team was newly founded when he entered, and they have since merely been able to get together a functional team or car. The competitiveness of the car have, to say the least, been poor. During his first year he had huge problems acclimatising to the new team and to find a setup of the car that fitted his drivingstyle. And the team as a whole, including the car, have never been really competitive.

And now Jenson Button, who i must say have always had his spot in my mind. But i don't think he have ever been a challenger for a championship and he have never had the pace to win serious wins. Although this might be true, he have always been a good member in the teams and a genuine gentleman.

This might not win him any races, and i think that's where he has his biggest weakness.

To conclude this, and preventing myself from writing a whole book about this matter, i have to admit that neither Barrichello or Button will ever be racing for a championship, but i still like the guys. They are genuine racers, not just stubborn old pricks who complain about everything.

And this is where Coulthard come into the mix. I really think that he has done all he can in racing on the track. I would genuinely love to listen to him, if he was to become a commentator on tv, or read his articles if he decided to begin writing articles in a paper. But on the track, i don't want him anymore. He don't have the right motivation, just hanging on to it because of the wrong reasons. Not having any fun anymore, not driving to improve himself, nor realizing the fact that he is getting to old to keep up with the competition. That is why i think he should quit. Not because i don't like him, but just to save whats left of his honour.

Sorry for the double and tripple posting, but there was a limit of 2000 characters, which i did not know about. And without a counter, there's just no way to keep track of that.

very valid point i agree to an extent that when the time is right move on...but picking up points for a newly formed team in the respects to the old timers like ferrari and mclaren it improbves the performance of the car in knowledge he puts forward and the points is a finacial gain for the team..must admit that he needs to prove himself more because if he dosen,t he,s out regardless of whether the time is right...my point on barricelo was when he was alongside schumi he should of cosistanly been number in the final standings but more often than not he was further down the field...has for button he,s not had a good start in f1 and gone no where forward in his career....he needs a good car under him or he,ll end up a maybe man..if ya know what i mean...maybe he could of done something...

i always thing schumi was and always will be number one but the only two drivers in the current line up that could become as good as him on the records is of cause rakkinen and hamilton..i would of said alonso but his arrogance has got in his way..which showed at mclaren....

have a good mate....
