Relient K is an American Christian rock/pop punk band from Canton, Ohio that formed in 1998. The band has received numerous awards including a Grammy Award nomination in 2003 for Best Rock Gospel Album and two Dove Awards.
The band broke into the mainstream in 2004 after Capitol signed them upon the release of their fourth record, Mmhmm, which debuted at #15 on the Billboard 200. It produced three top five hits on Christian radio and two top 20 hits on mainstream radio.
The band is named after guitarist Matt Hoopes' Plymouth Reliant K car ("K Car" is actually the name of one of their songs on their first album, Relient K.
If you've ever heard of Relient K, good for you! You have been truly blessed. Relient K is a band that sings from the heart. Yes, they will sometimes sing of God and Jesus, but they put it in context to what they are truly singing about. For example, on their first main release, Relient K, they sing the theme song from the American sitcom series Charles in Charge, while adding in their own verse about Buddy, the girl from Baywatch (referring to Jamie), and hanging out with Charles at the pizza parlor with Jesus.
If you've never heard of this band, I highly recommend them. Like I say, they sing of what they know, have been through, and have fun with it. They have a song about the guitarist's old car, for which they are named after for God's sake: "K Car," the Plymouth Reliant K.
