Go Speed Racer! That’s pretty much the only thing to say this weekend. Your two new options in theaters are little more than hollow entertainment with nothing to offer but a lot of eye candy. On the one hand you have groundbreaking, high speed special effects. On the other there’s Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. The choice is clear.
Speed Racer [Read the CB Review]is further proof that when it comes to the Wachowski brothers, the heavier the special effects the worse the movie. The Matrix films went from amazing to snooze-fest as the trilogy progressed and the Wachowski’s abandoned their story and characters in favor of finding excuses to incorporate eye-popping but useless CG. That tradition continues with their live-action version of the 60’s cartoon show. Pretty but pointless. But, hey, it has a monkey!
Equally pointless and certainly less pretty is What Happens in Vegas [Read the CB Review]. Ashton and Cameron return to their comfort zones doing asinine comedy. It turns out the premise is flimsy and the laughs more than a little tired. Brace yourself for the onslaught of reviews claiming the trite line “what happens in Vegas should”…well, you know. Actually, when I mentioned eye candy earlier…does Cameron still count? And, hey, it has a monkey too! Well, it has Ashton. Close enough.
If you must see either film, go for the action. However, if you haven’t seen Iron Man yet, that’s where you should be throwing your box office bucks to get the biggest bang. It may very well beat out Speed Racer to hold it’s place as the number one movie this weekend.
