Well dude...the beginning of metal:

Heavy metal: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Accept, Judas Priest

Black metal: Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost, Immortal, Emperor

Death metal: Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse

Power metal: Helloween, Blind Guardian, Stratovarius

Stoner metal: Cathedral, Candlemass

Thrash metal: Metallica (Kill′em All album), Testament, Kreator, Megadeth, Sepultura

Gothic metal: Theatre of Tragedy

Doom metal: My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost

Progressive metal: Fates Warning, Queensryche, Rush

Although some of the bands are still active, you can check out their early work, awesome stuff if you want to hear some classics...
