this is one of my very favorite musical artists. for those who don't yet know who this fascinating person is, it's natalie merchant, lead singer of the musical band 10,000 maniacs. just as a matter of course i'd recommend in my tribe and blindman's zoo to people not yet familiar with her music. i consider her a superstar in an entirely different spectrum: one that few artists have truly achieved. her modern-day counterpart is the graceful hayley westenra, whose charity work for bikes for ghana and unicef have won her wide acclaim. natalie is no slouch when it comes to seeing the humanitarian side of things, from her calmning, consolatory tune trouble me to her charitable work in a harlem homeless shelter. even while she left 10,000 maniacs, she did not leave the rest of the band in a state of frenzy. she made sure before her exit that the other maniacs would be able to feel secure before she left. it is this kind of thoughtfulness and kindness, along with her intellect that make her such an astounding person.
