There are many kinds of Animal Cruelty, Cruelty to Pets, Cruelty to Farm Animals, Circus and Zoo Animals,Etc.

Why Animal Rights?

Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to the circus and to zoos. Many of us bought our beloved “pets” at a pet shop. We wore wool, ate at KFC, and maybe even fished. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question “Why should animals have rights?”

Supporters of animal rights believe that animals matter as individuals; that they have their own value completely separate from how useful they are to us; and that every creature has a right to live free from pain and suffering. Animal rights is both a philosophy and a social movement that challenges society’s traditional view that all the other animals on this planet exist solely for human use. PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk has said, “When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness, and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. Each one values his or her life and fights the knife.”

Peter Singer, in his book Animal Liberation, states that the basic principle of equality does not require equal or identical treatment; it requires equal consideration. This is an important distinction when talking about animal rights. People often ask us if we really think that animals should have rights, and the answer is, quite simply, “Yes.” We’re not saying that animals should have drivers licenses or the right to vote, just that animals deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. Philosopher Jeremy Bentham once said that when deciding on a being’s rights, “[t]he question is not ‘Can they reason?’ nor ‘Can they talk?’ but ‘Can they suffer?’” What he meant is that if a being can suffer, then that being deserves the right to equal consideration. It doesn’t matter whether or not that being can talk or can understand mathematics. Regardless of anything else, all animals have the ability to suffer in the same way that human beings do. They feel pain, pleasure, fear, frustration, loneliness, and motherly love. So whenever we do anything that interferes with their needs, we have a moral responsibility to take them into account.

Only prejudice allows us to deny others the rights that we expect to have for ourselves. Whether prejudice is based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or species, it is morally unacceptable. If you wouldn’t eat a dog, why eat a pig? Think about it—both animals have the exact same ability to feel pain, but it is prejudice based on species that allows us to call one “pet” and the other “dinner.”

great post. it's true we did grow up prejudiced and not only prejudiced , but ignorant.some of us eat turkey for thanksgiving, slaughter a pig on christmas, a lamb for easter, in the name of religion(i wonder if those arent just pretexts to get stuffed with meat nowadays).fortunately, some wild animals, meant to be on the lower links of nature's chainfood(gazelles for example), have glands, that diminish theyre pain while they're being ripped apart.i doubt the chicken would have them, and while doctors praise fish and chicken meat for being healthy, we do put our own appetites under the flag of superiority. as for the dog, since some of us dont like its taste, we just keep him around for entertainment and beat the hell out of him if he dares not obey. it is not cruelty towards animals, its a brainwashing tradition, going on for centuries. starting from horses, dogs, we beat , ate tortured and did whatever thought necessary to turn the world in our favor. im not an animal ,lover, god knows i hate cat behaviour, dog's obiedience(he was any smarter, he'd bite u each time u throw a boot in his head, no matter how long u owned him), i hate roaches, ants, long sharp claws and teeth on any breathing four legged being. but i do nothing . they're there, maybe less of a parasyte than i am to earth/i wont compete with them by tryng to proove im better.

Hello Gandalf

Interesting post, but what would you say about the lion eating the deer or any other animal and a male lion killing little cubs when he takes over a pride, you might say that it is natural and it is in his nature to do so, well this is a long discussion and this is not the right place to do it.

There are places wherre dog meat is considered a delicacy.

It would be nice if the animal can defend for its rights.

......Wish ya the best........

Human bodies do need meat. Our brains developed bigger because we started eating meat. Without meat we would keep being not very bright apes. Why? Because plants require a lot of time of gathering and eating, while with meat you have to eat less. So more free time is used to think.

I don't like the taste of meat, but I do know that I have to eat it. I only eat cow, pig and chicken, though. I only eat what my body tells me I need, since I don't like the taste much.

Sheeps do actually like to be sheared, specially in summer in hot climates.

And cows love to be milked, specially by hand, not by those machines.

Dogs are a subspecies of wolves. Most people won't like to eat dog because they have an innate bond with them, it's in our DNA. You could call it a 'symbiosis'. Most dogs understand human body language and tones of voice, and many humans can do so with dogs.

Head in the clouds. Feet on the ground.
