DOA Moves To Face Stiffer Competition

DOA Moves To Face Stiffer Competition In a surprising show of confidence, MGM has bumped back the release date of their upcoming videogame adaptation DOA: Dead or Alive from mid-October to December 8. In October the film faced only tepid competition from low-budget indies and bad movies dumped there because they couldn't possibly compete with something audiences actually wanted to see. December 8 on the other hand puts it in direct competition with mega-releases like Mel Gibson's Apocalypto and Unaccompanied Minors.

What's with the overconfidence? Last we checked DOA was still a cheesy little T&A action movie. Female kung fu fighters in bikinis may be fun, but it's also cinematic trash, not a major release. Worst, it's a videogame movie and let's face it, those are almost always pretty piss poor box office performers. Does MGM actually think they can take on crazy Mel Gibson? Maybe they're betting that he'll get drunk again.

Hey, I don't mean to bash DOA. I've actually been looking forward to it. But MGM is now releasing it in a month usually reserved for Oscar contenders and major blockbusters. DOA is neither. In October it had a shot, in December they'd better start dropping tops if they want to sell tickets.
