20 Robots In Transformers 2?

There’s a story going around this morning which says that Transformers 2 screenwriter Robert Orci has proclaimed there will be a total of 20 transformers in the new movie. The quote from Robert comes from producer Don Murphy’s message board, and what he said was this: “I'd love and think we could almost barely manage ten on each side, with some front and center and others as more supporting.”

Note that he didn’t say there would be 20, only that he thinks they can manage 10 on each side. And actually, this was a post made by Orci waay back in February. So it’s not exactly new news. In fact, much more recently when he was asked on that same board how many robots would be in the film, he had this to say: “I hesitate to answer more specifically than saying there are new Transformers because it will invariably cause some to deduce, correctly or erroneously, other aspects of the film... such as scope or attention to character.”

I guess what I’m saying is that it’s a really old quote, a pretty vague quote, and probably shouldn’t be taken to mean much of anything at all. 20 robots battling it out on the big screen sounds really cool, but who knows if they’ll actually be able to manage that.

Transformers 2 starts shooting today, so maybe we’ll get more information on just which robots will be in the movie, in the coming weeks. Director Michael Bay seems to feel pretty good about it. He was everywhere at the MTV Movie Awards last night, pimping the start of principal photography and this morning he has a countdown clock rolling on his official site. When JoBlo caught him on the red carpet, he loudly proclaimed: “It’s not one of those bullshit sequels.” Sounds pretty good to me. Watch JoBlo’s complete red carpet interview with Bay below:
