Sid and Marty Krofft are back in style again. Next year you’ll see Will Ferrell starring in a big-budget version of their classic, extremely cheesy Saturday morning television show Land of the Lost, and according to Sid and Marty, the Hollywoodization of their ideas won’t stop there.

Marty Krofft recently told IESB that movie versions of their classic TV shows H.R. Pufnstuff and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters are on the way. Marty claims they’re only days away from finalizing the projects with a major, undisclosed movie studio.

If you were a kid in the 70s, then the names of Pufnstuff and Sigmund are instantly recognizable to you. They were huge hits in the 60s and 70s in children’s programming, and have achieved something akin to cult acclaim since then. H.R. Pufnstuff was about a boy who finds a magical place where everything is alive, and befriends a dragon named H.R. Pufnstuff. Sigmund use s similar plotline in the story of a cowardly sea monster who befriends two boys and stays in their hideout. Basically, they’re big on boys befriending things.

It’s not the plot that matters though. The Kroffts’ projects are mainly remembered for their creative, if often cheesy, special effects. Land of the Lost will reportedly try to make that work for it when it finally becomes a feature film, incorporating the rubbery silliness of the Kroffts’ world right into the script. Whether the same can be done with the rest of the Kroffts’ work is anybody’s guess.
