Star Wars In 3D: Can You Handle It?

George Lucas seems to have given up on making any more live-action movies that may further tarnish the legacy of Star Wars, and that’s a good thing. But he might be looking to dig into the vault and bring the six movies back to the big screen—again!—in a whole new jazzed-up format. A good thing, or beating a dead horse?

ComingSoon.net has it from DreamWorks honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg himself that Lucas is planning to re-release all six Star Wars films in digital 3D. “He isn't going to put a product out, I think, that isn't anything other than first rate.” People who bought tickets to Attack of the Clones may disagree, but hey, moving on. The 3D “revolution,” as some people like to call it, is already upon us, but thus far it’s focused on turning new adventures into 3D thrill rides. Can we really handle seeing Mark Hamill popping out at us from the screen? And are there enough moments in the film that can be tailored for 3D, even though the movies weren’t made with that in mind? Granted, Obi-Wan’s hologram/phone call/whatever appearance in 3D will look as awesome as us as it did to Princess Leia. But other than that, it really just seems like George Lucas is aiming to milk another buck out of his beloved series, and that simply doesn’t sound worth it.
