BitComet freezing the computer
Size: Large, Medium, Small Thu Aug 28, 08 10:31 PM | Category: My Postbar

Good morning/afternoon/evening to all.

I'm experiencing a problem while using the BitComet application. It began around the beginning of this year, and I was using BitComet version 0.98, 0.99 or 1.00 (not sure which) at the time. I've lurked a bit around internet but couldn't find any solution - only other people complaining about the same problem with BitComet.

This is the deal: after a few minutes, sometimes hours, that BitComet is open and active, the PC itself freezes. A warning window shows up saying something like "BitComet is not responding. Would you like to terminate the application?". After that, the computer stops responding to anything. And the only way to get it to work again is reset the system.

A noteworthy fact is that this only happens under Windows XP. My desktop has both Windows XP Pro SP2 and Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 installed, and while in Vista, nothing similar to that ever happened. Same thing for my laptop, which runs a Vista Basic, and never presented any problems.

The current installation of the XP is a fresh one, just installed it last week. Before that, since the beginning of this year I formatted my computer a few times, and installed XP, only to find the same problem happening when I tried the program.

Another (perhaps) important fact, is that I suspect this errors to began after I patched the TCP/IP sys file, expanding the half-open limit to 50 instead of 10. Both of my Vista's system weren't TCP/IP patched, since, when I looked it up, seemed like a hell of stuff to do to patch the file under this OS.

While it's working, the speeds are great, usually 100+kbps in good seeded torrents, unlinke other BitTorrent applications, which give me only around 25-35kbps. So, it's very relevant to my interests if I could make this program works.

Well, guess that's it. Pretty much explained. I give you some basic tech info below, and a thanks in advance for anyone who helps me with this.

Motherboard: ASUS A7V400-MX

Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) 2400+; 1.66GHz, 1,25 GB RAM

OS: Windows XP Professional SP2 (fresh install)

Current BitComet installed version: 1.04

My network is a simple one, DSL, no router (just a hub - sharing the PC's internet connection to the laptop), and all the ports seem to be ok in status.

I have exactly the same problem and am also running XP SP 2. In addition, I've had the same problem with my old motherboard (ASRock 775-DUAL VSTA) and my new motherboard running on a clean XP install with a new video card.

I've tried changing my tcp/ip half-open limit to 50 but that hasn't changed anything.

Interestingly, I've noticed that although my computer becomes completely unresponsive, there is some hard drive activity while the computer is frozen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R / ASRock 775-DUAL

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

Video Card: ATI x850 / GeForce 8800GT

Occurs with BitComet: 1.0/1.03/1.04

Network: Linksys WRT54GS running tomato 1.19

It's not quite so Random. I've fiddled about with this and found that if you are downloading large files int he sort of 800MB+ region then BitComet will freeze, however if you are downloading smaller files it doesnt seem to do this.

Even Large quantities of small files, say Albums and so on, and it all adds up to plus 800MB then it still crashes, it's something to do with how much data you are downloading, not so much a problem that's just Random.

...

Saying this, I have no idea how to fix this problem.

What I have had to do is Download a couple of files at a time and if they are bigger than 1GB I download that one file only.

OH! also, even if you have started the task, and it has created the temporary .bc files or even if you have chosen the option not to have that extension, and you are NOT downloading it at the time, it still freezes!

So, only start a few tasks, and as I said, try not to get it over 1GB in total for all tasks started.

We'll have to do this until BitComet staff get it sorted I'm afraid.

Hope it helps in some way.

I suppose, as lame as this situation is, it also stops us from Seeding, which is not very good considering it's inconsiderate!
