uTorrent - A Beginner's Guide to torrent downloading

uTorrent

uTorrent implements many of the features introduced by much larger clients, but uTorrent retains a very small memory footprint. uTorrent's typical memory usage is less than 6 MB, and the CPU use is low enough for most older systems (as low as 486) to run it. uTorrent is one of the most popular BiTorrent clients for PC users.

uTorrent is a BitTorrent client for Microsoft Windows. uTorrent is included in a single 214 KiB (as of April 2008) executable. It was designed to use as little of the computer's resources as possible while offering a lot of the functionality expected from 'full-featured' clients, such as Azureus and BitComet.

  • Micro-Sized Yet Feature Filled - Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0, and now BitComet 0.63) and peer exchange.
  • Resource-Friendly - µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 160 KB in size.
  • Skinnable and Localized - Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn't available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!
  • Actively Developed and Improved - The developer puts in a lot of time working on features and making things more user friendly. Releases only come out when they're ready, with no schedule pressures, so the few bugs that appear are quickly addressed and fixed.

Some of the more notable features present in uTorrent include:

  • Protocol Encryption
  • RSS Broadcatching/Toolbar Button
  • Configurable bandwidth scheduler
  • Customizable search bar and icons
  • Localized to different languages
  • Multiple simultaneous downloads
  • Incredibly small: 155 KB

Easy step-by-step guide that will help you start downloading movies, music, TV shows, and more in no time at all.

For most people getting started with the whole "BitTorrent downloading thing" can be pretty intimidating. Sure maybe some of you had practice with Napster or KaZaA back in the day, but times have changed. Now it's "trackers" and "clients," and the list of new terminology goes on and on. So exactly how and where to begin can be a daunting and intimidating proposition.

So for those of you looking for an easy way to find the path to downloading enlightenment, I present to you an easy quick-step guide to get you up and downloading in no time at all.

The first thing we need to do is acquire a BitTorrent client.. This is the program that will do the actual downloading for you. There are many to choose from and each has their own positives and negatives, so it's up to you decide which best suits your needs and PC capabilities.

Currently, the most popular client server program is uTorrent because it's relatively simple, effective, and most importantly lightweight. It's small memory footprint consumes only 6MB of memory.

Now the guide below will take you through the uTorrent setup process and beyond.

INSTALLATION & SETUP

To begin, download uTorrent and install it.

Now we need to configure it to work properly and at a maximized setting based on your PCs internet connection speed.

1. Select "Speed Guide" from the Options Menu as shown below.

2. Run a "Speed Test" and note your upload connection speed.

3. Select your the connection speed determined above in the drop down menu as shown.

4. Choose a port number between 49512 and 65535(the recommended range). Also, the selected port must be forwarded if operating behind a router. As you can see in the picture, I went ahead and used port 49789 and then TESTED it.

....this is the message you should then see in your browser

5. Lastly, it asks if you want to "Enable Encryption." The reason for this is that many ISPs block or throttle BitTorrent connection speeds and this setting helps mask it. To test if your ISP throttles BitTorrent traffic CLICK HERE.

6. Click "Use Selected Settings"

PREFERENCES

There's a number of different features and options, but the only we'll concern ourselves with is where you want your downloads to go. You'd be surprised at how many people have trouble locating where their downloads are at.

1. Select "Preferences" from the Options Menu.

2. Here simply enter the folder location for where you want your downloads to be put in.

That's it. You're finished. Congratulations.

I'm All Set Up, Now What Do I Do?

Check out our extensive list of BitTorrent tracker sites for the latest and greatest in download sites. Also, I suggest reading our story on Private versus Public Tracker Sites to get an idea of what to expect from each.

So How Do I Download Stuff?

First you need to find what's called a BitTorrent tracker site, it's a site which has the actual torrent files that allow users to connect with one another and share data (CLICK HERE FOR TERMINOLOGY).

In the picture below I use the LegalTorrents site since I show actual downloading and wish to of course comply with copyright laws. As shown I selected the download arrow in order to download the torrent file and thus the corresponding content.

The files should then appear in uTorrent and begin downloading.

For a more honest representation, here's how it would look if you wanted to download content from The Pirate Bay, the world's largest BitTorrent tracker site.

Using "Star Wars" as the search query, I selected a Star Wars e-Book to download.

Then simply select the file and then DOWNLOAD THIS TORRENT.

Easy enough right?

Hi!

Good post.

Yes, μTorrent is small and simply just all what a torrent client really needs.

UI is simple.No hassle.

As for what they call "skin", it is no more than buttons and icons. They work both on μTorrent and BitTorrent (and maybe most other μTorrent interfaced based engine client). I haven't stumble upon any kind of skin like Firefox has for its browser. Now that would be the real skin's whole nine yard when I mean skins.

The UI permits to customize search engine. The user simply add the url from any search engine he/she choose to do so. How to find the search-link and add it is fairly simple. For a new-be like me, I simply did a search for example with "torrentscan.com", after that, I took the basic of the url's result, meaning I exclude all of what was rest of the url that was composing that search to begin with:

Lets say I wanna find the link to put in my BitTorrent and use a word like "rockfest" in the BitComet search engine. Click search video, and have the full url like this:

http://v.mcomet.com/search.aspx?q=rockfest

I keep:

http://v.mcomet.com/search.aspx?q=

or this one here(which I mostly use)

http://torrentscan.com/?go=rockfest

I keep:

http://torrentscan.com/?go=

or

http://btjunkie.org/search?q=rockfest&c=0&t=0&o=52&f=1

and I keep:

http://btjunkie.org/search?q=

and paste that in the UI menu preference among with the others that are already there and add a space in between them if I choose.

So when typing a tittle in the client search-box, your preferred browser will quickly open (I use firefox now) and go directly to the result-page.

Some url-engine might not work. That's mostly why I use search engine (eg;torrentscan.com) that search other search engines (eg; btjunkie.org, piratebay, etc.).

Like I said, I'm a new-be. I've learn a hard lesson with BitComet. Yes it is quiet heavy compared to other torrent client. The obvious reason is that it has a browser, and it can give a huge back door to any ***ware you can think of. BitComet use a IE......

....Like I said, I'm a new-be. I've learn a hard lesson with BitComet. Yes it is quiet heavy compared to other torrent client. The obvious reason is that it has a browser, and it can give a huge back door to any ***ware you can think of. BitComet use a IE base browser version 4 or 5 just like RealPlayer does. Of course, most security up-date don't necessarily work with its already based "very" slow browser. That in itself should have told me that something was wrong, but, when you start learning, sometimes you learn in harder ways than others.

Speaking security, μTorrent and BitTorrent lets you choose which action should take place when download is done before even moving them to the chosen directory. Azureus doesn't have that feature, which I also had problems with. One can even choose for the file open itself (just like Vuse can do for Azureus). As you'd guess, I choose to scan the file or directory with the security-ware I choose to scan it with.

I also keep a log composed of url-trackers that I paste in it with the already tracker url that are with the new torrent-download. After the tracker up-dates, I remove the ones that have no use and don't log-in.

As for its RAM and CPU usage, I often download 10GB files with only some 25GB of space left on my 200GB drive even while running browser and other apps. Its only a bit slower, but I have vista, so I'm used to slowliness;)

Peace

Ghis
