question about the bitcomet tracker & eMule plug-in

hi there,

1. first, i'm having hard time figuring out what does this bitcomet tracker do, what is it for, what does it do with those ports in the config that default to 8080 both UDP and TCP

2. second, i also cant figure out how the eMule plug-in works. after i installed and enabled the plugin i noticed that eMule got copied into my bitcomet folder as a separate app., but it doesnt really works in the traditional sense, so does it gets used by bitcomet only under the cover, or do i have to tweak the settings on eMule also. for example i run Vista ultimate which has a limit of 25 half-open TCP connections, i already use 18 by bicoemt and the default for eMule is 9 which goes over the limit. should i do something about it, or everything is taken care by bitcomet?

no1 you and me both.

no2 good question because if you actually open emule plugin there are some settings in there according to there own website that if they are not configured the plugin just wont work.

Ive disabled the plugin and it hasnt made any effect on performance , finding torrets in torrent share or infact anything . So whats it there for ,i guess nothing.

When i had ultimate i looked into altering the half open limits and even asked on different sites etc and what i was told was to leave well alone because vista automatically alters the limits. --Take that as you will.

Just take alook in the error codes on vista and look for the 4226 error [i think thats the correct one,if not someone will correct that information] and if thats not showing your not hitting your max half open and everthing is hunky dory.

cheers

First of all, your not correct about the limit of half-open connections. All windows versions and service packs allow unlimited number of half-open connections. What is limited is how fast they can open. WinXP sp2 and above will allow only 10 per second to open, and for good cause, since some worm viruses will open millions in the second or two it takes your A/V to shut it down.

Altering your your tcpip.sys file to allow more then 10 per second is very risky, and can make your system unstable, and generally will NOT increase your download speed at all, and at best "may" save you 30 seconds download time on any given torrent.

BitComet tracker is rarely used these days, so there is no need to worry about it since you really shouldn't be messing with it if you don't know what it is.

eMule plugin will enable BitComet to use eMule sources to download files in your tasks if "search for mirrors" option is enabled, and an eMule source is found on our servers.

It can be a great enhancement, and the more its used, the better it will become, but I personally have rarely see it find such a source, but I recommend everyone use it as it will continue to build our databases as more people use it.

You can also access the eMule directly to download ed2k links you find on your own.

first of all

Microsoft enforces a limit on half-open TCP/IP connections that is hard-coded in tcpip.sys. The maximum simultaneous half-open (incomplete) outbound TCP connection attempts per second that the system can make is intended to limit the spread of malicious viruses and worms, as well as limit the possibility of launching a DDoS attack. However, it has proven to also limit some applications using many TCP connections, such as P2P and P2PTV programs.

When the OS reaches the half-open connection limit, Event Viewer displays the following entry:

EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

The limit in Windows XP (SP2) is 10 incomplete concurrent connection attempts per second. In Windows Vista, the default limit differs, depending on the edition - ranging from 2 half-open connections in Vista Home Basic, to 25 in Vista Ultimate.

Under normal use, this limit is rarely reached (especially in Vista Ultimate), however it often hinders P2P and P2PTV applications that depend on a large number of TCP connections.

Due to the enhanced security in Vista, it is a bit more complicated to increase the TCP concurrent half-open connections limit. It requires downloading a patched tcpip.sys, changing a registry parameter and disabling driver signing in x64 editions (potentially after every reboot). Note that subsequent Windows updates and Service Packs may override tcpip.sys with a newer version as well.

if this is such a risk why then is it an option in the client itself ?

And to the emule plugin this is what im saying ive disabled it and it hasnt made any difference what so ever ,im still getting the 10000+ sources/files/films what ever you want to call it. I just cant see a difference.

Also to go through the plugin directly. the main site states it has to be set up correctly definately 2 settings which arent set up by default or it wont work.

cheers
