Hot on the heels of the news that Winona Ryder has been cast as Spock’s mother Amanda Star Trek, comes word on more parental casting. IESB reports that an actor named Chris Hemsworth has been cast as James T. Kirk’s father.
Like Ryder, Hemsworth looks a little young to be playing the father of a starship bridge officer. Casting such younger actors could indicate that we’ll see flashbacks in the movie, maybe with Spock and Kirk as kids or I suppose Hemsworth could pull off playing the father of a teenager. In either case, I still find it hard to believe that either parental role will be anything major.
Additionally, IESB has also been able to confirm that actress Jennifer Morrison has been cast in Trek. They’re speculating that she might be playing the love of James T. Kirk’s youth and father of his only son, Carol Marcus, though right now it’s all just wild guesses. Pictures snapped of her on set show her sporting flowing blonde locks, so she could also be Yeoman Rand, or even some new character we know nothing about.
Meanwhile, Bruce Greenwood, who we learned last week would be playing the Enterprise’s pre-Kirk captain Chris Pike has been out talking to MTV about his big role in Star Trek. Greenwood revealed that we won’t see Chris Pike in his infamous, blinking-box chair, which makes sense since the film is supposed to be set in a time period when Pike is still running on two legs. He also revealed that he’s been fit for his costume, and that he thinks there will be a certain nod to the 60s in the new Starfleet costume designs.
