Band: Theatre of Tragedy

Album reviewed: "Storm" (2006)

Genre: Gothic Metal

After the album "Assembly", Liv Kristine left the band on friendly terms to form a project called Leaves´ Eyes with her husband and vocalist of the band Atrocity Alexander Krull (in fact all the line up of the band Atrocity functions as Leaves´ Eyes as well). The replacement for the lead female vocalist in Theatre of Tragedy was Nell Sigland, which in my opinion succeeded in filling the void left by Liv if you consider the new path the band took in their musical style. Her voice is not operatic; on the contrary she has......

Band: Theatre of Tragedy

Albums reviewed: "Musique" (2000), "Assembly" (2002)

Genre: Industrial/Techno

After gaining global respect in the metal scene with their previous three albums and a solid fan base, Theatre of Tragedy took a decision that shocked fans and reviewers alike. In 2000 they released the album "Musique" in which they took an 180 degrees turn in their musical style, experimenting this time with electronic music, specifically a mix of industrial, techno and electro-pop. This period went on for several years with a follow up album called "Assembly", which continued with the same......

Band: Theatre of Tragedy

Albums reviewed: "Theatre of Tragedy" (1995), "Velvet Darkness They Fear" (1996)

Genre: Gothic/Doom Metal

Norway's Theatre of Tragedy is such an interesting band that I will dedicate my next four posts to review its different facets, which can be divided in four musical periods: gothic/doom metal, ambient goth rock, techno/industrial and gothic metal.

Theatre of Tragedy was a landmark in the gothic/doom metal scene back in the nineties because it was one of the first bands to introduce the "beauty and the beast" vocal style, this being clean angelical vocals by the excellent......

Band: Diablo Swing Orchestra

Genre: Avant-garde Metal

Discography: "Borderline Hymns" (EP, 2003), "The Butcher's Ballroom" (2006)

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of the metal spectrum, Sweden's Diablo Swing Orchestra goes so far that you end up wondering if it is correct to categorize this kind of music as metal. Many adjectives are use to label the subgenres, but I think that the two more appropriate to describe Diablo Swing Orchestra's music would be avant-garde and eclectic.

Let's reviewed what the dictionary has to say about those two words:

Kalmah - Swampsong

Band: Kalmah

Genre: Melodic Death Metal

Discography: "Swamplord" (2001), "They Will Return" (2002), "Swampsong" (2003), "The Black Waltz" (2006), "For The Revolution" (2008)

I listen to metal because of its variety and high standard playing (at least in good metal I mean). Other reason is that I can find an album, band or subgenre to make me company in any mood I'm in any particular day. Especially I love the bands that when listening to them turn the day a better one.

One of such bands is the extraordinary Kalmah, the lords of melody. Every time I listen......

Summoning - Stroghold a

Band: Summoning

Originality does not come often in the metal scene. Although you can hear a lot of good albums, the sensation of "that´s been done before" always is present. So when I first heard the austrian band Summoning, it hit me right in the face with its totally innovative......
