Alicia Keys' MySpace page isn't the only profile to be hacked with malware. Some 8,000 band profiles have been hacked in the exact same way and many of those profiles are still linked to malware sites, according to security researcher Chris Boyd, who first posted information about the attack on October 31.

MySpace has denied that there is a security problem with the social-networking site, saying that the bands that were hacked fell victim to phishing attacks, which compromised their profile passwords.

Writing on his VitalSecurity blog, Boyd said MySpace's explanation defies rational thinking. "This is patently nonsense," Boyd wrote. "What an endless stream of bands, record labels, music newspapers, and producers all woke up yesterday and forgot what the real MySpace Web site looks like? Give me a break."

'Bubbling Scum of Malware'

The fact that Keys' profile was rehacked after MySpace announced it had been cleaned belies the notion that phishing is responsible, said Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle. "I tend to agree that there is a yet-to-be-reported problem with MySpace," Storms said. "MySpace has gotten a bad rep as a bubbling scum of malware," he added. "It's where people go to incubate their malware."

RIYADH (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush, trying to counter Iran's growing military clout, made clear his commitment on Monday to go ahead with a major arms sale to Saudi Arabia as he began his first visit to the Islamic kingdom.

Hours after his arrival in Riyadh, the U.S. administration said it had formally notified Congress of its intention to sell the Saudis a controversial package of advanced weaponry.

The deal appeared to be part of Bush's effort to persuade Saudi Arabia, the Arab world's richest and most influential state, to help contain Iran and counter what he has branded a growing threat to the world's security.

Nearing the final stages of his most extensive Middle East tour, Bush flew from Dubai to Riyadh on Monday for talks with King Abdullah, a staunch U.S. ally and ruler of the world's biggest oil producer.

Abdullah embraced Bush at the foot of his Air Force One presidential jet and they walked together down a red carpet flanked by a military honour guard as music played.

Hours later, as the two leaders met......

Security experts are warning about a stealthy Windows virus that steals login details for online bank accounts. In the last month, the malicious program has racked up about 5,000 victims - most of whom are in Europe. The malicious program is a type of virus known as a rootkit and it tries to overwrite part of a computer’s hard drive called the Master Boot Record (MBR). Once installed the virus, dubbed Mebroot by Symantec, usually downloads other malicious programs, such as keyloggers, to do the work of stealing confidential information. Most of these associated programs lie in wait on a machine until its owner logs in to the online banking systems of one of more than 900 financial institutions.

The Russian virus-writing group behind Mebroot is thought to have created the torpig family of viruses that are known to have been installed on more than 200,000 systems. This group specialises in stealing bank login information. Security firm iDefense said Mebroot was discovered in October but started to be used in a series of attacks in early December. Between 12 December and 7 January, iDefense detected more than 5,000 machines that had been infected with the program. As it installs through security holes in Microsoft Explorer, it’s just another reason to use Firefox or Opera…

Sony BMG, the music company, announced Thursday that it would become the fourth and final major label to begin selling digital music on Amazon.com, offering its entire catalog in the MP3 format by the end of the month. The move by Sony BMG, which represents artists like Bruce Springsteen, the Foo Fighters, Santana and Justin Timberlake, further positions Amazon’s digital music store as a significant rival to the market leader, the iTunes store from Apple. “This is such an exciting day for us and our customers,” said Bill Carr, vice president for digital music at Amazon. “All four major labels will be part of our service. It means our customers will really have access to all the biggest artists in the world.

”Sony’s embrace of the MP3 format is also the latest blow to the technology known as digital rights management software, or D.R.M., which is intended to prevent consumers from making unauthorized copies of digital material. But Sony’s partnership with Amazon.com also underscores the music industry’s gathering effort to nurture an online rival to Apple, which has sold more than three billion songs through its iTunes store. Most music purchased on iTunes can be played only on Apple devices, and Apple insists on selling all single tracks for 99 cents. Amazon, which sells tracks for anywhere from 89 cents to over a dollar, offers the pricing variability the labels want. This is obviously a great news for people buying the music, but the majority of us probably don’t care too much about pricing variability, thanks to the scene.

PSP owners will finally make good use out of the system’s voice-over IP functionality, with the official addition of a custom version of the online calling service Skype. With the next scheduled firmware update, users will be able to download a completely functional version of Skype for the PSP.  In addition to making phone calls to existing Skype users, PSP owners will be able to manage their contacts list, see who’s online and who’s not, make and calls to/from actual telephone numbers, and have complete access to Skype account settings.

According to Sony, this functionality only works properly with the newer slim version of the PSP, further creating obsolescence for the original model. The firmware update is slated for the end of this month.  A Skype icon will be added to the “Network” category of the PSP’s Xross Media Bar.  Users will also be able to create a Skype account directly from the portable system.  The feature will require a nominal download, so a Memory Stick will be needed to access the program.

How much hard-drive capacity can you fit into a 2.5-inch space? Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) ups the ante with the debut of what it’s calling the world’s highest-capacity mobile hard drive. The half-terabyte (500GB) Hitachi Travelstar 5K500 internal hard drive is targeted for use in “slim” desktops, full-featured notebooks, and gaming consoles. The Travelstar 5K500, available in either a 400GB or 500GB model, is the fourth-generation Hitachi mobile drive to use perpendicular magnetic recording technology to deliver breakthrough capacity and reliability. The drive is available with a 3.0Gbps Serial ATA (SATA) interface.

The Travelstar 5K500 offers some innovative features, such the Hitachi-patented Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) technology, which acts as an “early warning” system for the drive, enabling it to sense a possible disturbance (such as vibrations within the system enclosure) in advance and take the necessary steps to stabilize the drive head and avoid any disruptions. The hard drive also features 400G shock protection. Hitachi is also jumping on the “green” wagon. The Travelstar 5K500 uses a three-disk design, but uses only as much power as its two-disk predecessor, the 5K250, making the new drive relatively energy-efficient. The Travelstar 5K500 features a 1.9 watt read/write power draw, and its 0.7 watt low power idle means longer battery life for notebooks. It wasn’t that long ago when I admired a 120GB drive in my laptop as something really hi-tech and it looks like a pretty outdated piece of hardware now…
