VLC Player Vulnerable to Remote

Hijack

Written by Ernesto on March 18, 2008

VLC Player, one of the best and most widely used media players has found to be vulnerable to a remote hijack. The reported vulnerability makes it possible for a malicious user to run arbitrary code, potentially taking remote control of the host machine.

vlc media playerVLC is a popular media player among BitTorrent users. Not just for the fact that it is free, also because it includes a huge number of the video codecs, so it can play virtually every video file available.

Unfortunately, the latest versions of VLC have a security flaw according to a report from Luigi......

Demonoid Tracker Moves to Ukraine

Written by Ernesto on March 16, 2008

Demonoid, once one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, has reappeared again, this time hosted in Ukraine. The website is still down but the trackers are now fully operational again, perhaps a sign that Demonoid is crawling back up to speed?

demonoidIn June 2007 Demonoid was pressured to leave their host in the Netherlands, mainly because of legal threats from the Dutch anti-piracy outfit, BREIN. The site then relocated to Canada, but after threats from the CRIA, it decided to shut down there as well.

A month ago we reported on the brief resurrection of the Demonoid......

BitTorrent Rip Off Sites, and How to Avoid Them

Written by Ernesto on March 01, 2008

BitTorrent is supposed to be hassle free, that’s why it’s so attractive right? Sadly, it is also used by by scammers to generate money, often through trickery and deception. Recently, a new ring of BitTorrent rip off sites has sprung up, this time related to movie codecs.

Spamming BitTorrent sites with fake movies is nothing new. We’ve reported before how people download movies only to find out that they require a special media player to play it, or others, which are bundled with malware to infect their PC when they install it.

Today, sadly, we have to report on a new ring of BitTorrent scam sites. This particular brand notifies people who try to play a video file they’ve just downloaded that they need to download a codec if they want to play the file. The site they are redirected to is of course a scam, most of them are filled with annoying ads.......

Cashing In on Naive BitTorrent Users

Written by Ernesto on February 29, 2008

BitTorrent sites are overloaded with ads for malware ridden BitTorrent clients and paid tutorials that promise to quadruple your download speed. They try to lure naive users into downloading their products with catchy phrases such as “Breakthrough Information Will Have You Downloading Torrents Up To 475% Faster”. It’s time to take them down.

Last year we reported several times on the family of malware supported BitTorrent clients such as Torrent101, BitRoll, TorrentQ and GetTorrent. These clients promised ‘high speed downloads’ but actually installed a payload of malware onto the victim’s PC. It seems that our articles resulted in the desired response, with most torrent sites effectively banned their ads.

Recently, however, we have noticed an increase in ads for paid tutorials. A couple of months ago we posted about highspeedtorrent.com, a site that promised to......

Mininova Celebrates Its 3rd Anniversary

Written by Ernesto on January 14, 2008

The popular BitTorrent site Mininova celebrates its 3rd anniversary today. At the time it launched, no one would have predicted that it would become the success story it turned out to be, but we can now safely say that Mininova is here to stay.

mininova logoThere was quite a bit of news surrounding Mininova in the last year, they regained the .com domain, served billions of torrents, and launched a content distribution platform for independent publishers. Most impressive perhaps is that they are now among the 50 most visited websites on the Internet, which makes them the most frequently......

Mininova Launches Content Distribution Service

Written by Ernesto on December 21, 2007

The popular BitTorrent site Mininova officially launched its Content Distribution service, an easy way for indie publishers to share their content with a wide audience, for free of course.

Mininova Launches Indie Publisher PlatformAll the files published with the new Content Distribution (CD) service will be placed on the frontpage as featured content. The publishers don’t need to have any knowledge about BitTorrent because Mininova will create the torrent and make sure it is seeded.

This service will not only save publishers a lot of bandwidth, they will also reach a huge audience. Mininova is listed......

What Happened to Demonoid, Will it Ever Return?

Written by Ernesto on December 13, 2007

Ever since Demonoid decided to pull the plug following pressure from the CRIA, thousands of members are wondering what happened. Perhaps even more importantly, they are asking themselves this: Is Demonoid ever going to come back?

What Happened To Demonoid

Nobody really seems to know what the future holds for Demonoid, however, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be the most popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker, has given people a little hope.

He writes: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There......

Charity Forced to Pay Copyright Fee So Kids Can Sing Carols

Written by enigmax on December 09, 2007

Christmas is known world-wide as a time for sharing, a time for giving. But for one charity, instead of Santa arriving with gifts, the copyright police turned up demanding money. Why? Because the charity allows children to sing carols on the premises and their kitchen radio is a little loud. You couldn’t make it up.

Be under no illusion, being unlicensed to play music to the public is a very serious situation in the UK. The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 states that if you use copyright music in public, you have to get permission from......

Smelling Blood, BREIN Targets Mininova, Torrentspy and Btjunkie

Written by enigmax on December 07, 2007

Following the huge pressure it successfully put on LeaseWeb to shut BitTorrent sites, anti-piracy outfit BREIN smells blood as it casts a wider net to force other ISPs to shut down other huge sites, including the likes of Mininova, TorrentSpy and BTJunkie.

During the last month we’ve reported a few times on the likelihood that BREIN pressure would lead to a shuttering of BitTorrent sites at LeaseWeb. After LeaseWeb issued an ultimatum for BitTorrent sites to leave its hosting by December 1st, at least ten major sites left for hosting in new countries such as Sweden, while others felt that re-locating within the Netherlands would be acceptable, providing it was with another ISP.

BREIN director Tim Kuik is proud of these successes in The Netherlands, and although some sites have moved outside BREIN’s ‘jurisdiction’ by moving abroad,......
