BitTorrent: Bypass any Firewall or Throttling ISP with SSH

Written by Ernesto on October 14, 2007

On some networks it’s impossible to use BitTorrent. For example, if you’re at work, school, or connected to Comcast or a public hotspot. But there’s an easy solution to overcome this problem. By using a secure connection (SSH), you can bypass almost every firewall or traffic shaping application.

Here’s a relatively simple 3-step guide that will show you how to set it up.

I wouldn’t recommend BitTorrent over SSH as a permanent solution since it will cripple the servers of the SSH providers. If you’re looking for a long term solution check out a VPN service such as Relakks.

1. Get an SSH account.

You need an SSH account in order to get this working. You can try one of these free shell providers from this list. I currently use silenceisdefeat which requires a small $1 donation. However, the account is immediately activated and works fine for me.

2. Download, Install and ......

Fearless Digital Pirates Don’t Care

About Lawsuits

Written by enigmax on October 13, 2007

The year 2005 saw the first person sentenced to prison for sharing a movie. In 2007, the possibility of being fined huge amounts became a reality as a music sharer snared by the RIAA picks up a $222,000 bill. So presumably file-sharers are in hiding? Hardly. This fearless internet breed never stops sharing.

Once it became clear that the ‘Grokster Decision’ was actually a win for file-sharing and not the golden bullet against sharers that the industry had hoped for, it became increasingly clear - sharing was simply not going to go away. Today, if one visits the Grokster site, you’re greeted by this message:

There are legal services for downloading music and movies.
This service is not one of them.

YOUR IP ADDRESS IS 83.233.168.134 AND HAS BEEN LOGGED.
Don’t think you can’t get caught. You are not anonymous.

Apart from the fact that I am anonymous (the IP is owned by......

MPAA Not Done With TorrentSpy Yet

Written by Ernesto on October 12, 2007

Over the past months the TorrentSpy crew has made several drastic changes to their website. They have stopped hosting .torrent files, and even banned US visitors. However, this is not enough according to the MPAA who has filed another complaint and asked the judge for sanctions against the popular BitTorrent site.

In August, a federal judge ordered TorrentSpy to log all user data stored in RAM. In a response to this decision - and to ensure the privacy of their users - they decided that it was best to block access to all users from the US. However, the MPAA now argues that TorrentSpy is ignoring the court decision.

TorrentSpy, once the most visited BitTorrent site on the Internet has already taken some serious hits from the MPAA and are now facing another attempt to try and knock them out for good. Earlier this week we reported that TorrentSpy’s traffic, and thus their revenue h......

RIAA Misinformation Campaign Apparently Works

Written by Ben Jones on October 09, 2007

A Juror in the recent Capitol V Thomas trial speaks out, and potentially opens up avenues for overturning the verdict. His message to the RIAA – ‘your strategy is working’

RIAAOne of the jurors in the trial, which last Thursday awarded $222,000 in punitive damages against a Minnesota mother of two, spoke in an interview with Wired’s Threat Level about the decision they made.

The juror, Michael Hegg, a steelworker that claims he has never been on the Internet, said it took just five minutes to reach the verdict. However hours were spent deciding, or ‘bickering’......

Australians Next on the P2P Lawsuit Hitlist

Written by enigmax on October 08, 2007

Facing failure in their quest to force ISPs to warn and disconnect file-sharers, the anti-piracy division of the Australian music industry is now threatening to go the route of the RIAA and start taking legal action against individuals.

MIPI Logo

The Music Industry Piracy Investigations (MIPI) in conjunction with the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) have been pressurizing Australian Internet Service Providers to take action against those it accuses of infringing its copyrights.

They have informed ISPs that they require them to send warning notices......

Mininova.org Servers and Traffic: 2006 vs 2007

Written by Ernesto on October 04, 2007

Mininova.org has experienced some massive growth over the past year. The number of visitors went up from less than a million per day to 3 million, and to keep everything running smoothly the server park nearly tripled from 7 to 19 servers.

Mininova.org Servers and Traffic: 2006 vs 2007Mininova is without a doubt the most popular BitTorrent site in terms of traffic. According to Alexa they are among the 100 most visited sites on the Internet, more popular than Digg.com, Apple.com and TorrentFreak.com for example.

In September Mininova received over 70.000.000 visitors that generated more than 300.000.000......

Demonoid Aftermath: An Open Letter to the CRIA

Written by Ernesto on October 04, 2007

In the aftermath of the recent demonoid turmoil, A former music buyer posted an open letter to the CRIA - an impressive summary of what’s wrong with the music industry and how they alienate their customers. The RIAA and the CRIA have to rethink their business models, closing down p2p sites does not solve the problem.

To Whom It May Concern at the CRIA:

I have been an avid music collector for many years, and have approximately 1000 CD’s in my collection, not counting albums that I have purchased over the internet and own only digital copies of. I purchase approximately 30-40 new CDs per year. However, thanks to your recent decision to block Canadian users from accessing Demonoid, I have decided that I cannot continue to support this backwards, dysfunctional industry with my money any longer, and as such, I do not plan on purchasing music ever again if it means that one penny goes to......

The Pirate Bay is without a doubt the most popular BitTorrent tracker. Unfortunately their current tracker system is not performing as it used to and has reached its effective limit. The TPB team is currently working on a more efficient Open Source tracker system that, among other things, will guarantee better protection against anti-piracy outfits.

The Pirate Bay is Developing a New BitTorrent TrackerSome of you might have noticed that the Pirate Bay trackers were down for a couple of hours today. The reason for the downtime is not related to an anti-piracy organization this time, on the contrary. TPB has moved its servers to a new datacenter and added ......
